‘Biscuits!’ comes to Peterborough’s Key Theatre

Updated: Jun 21, 2023

There is an event coming up on Wednesday and Thursday the 14th and 15th of June! Acclaimed arts and disability activists — Touretteshero — are bringing their fantastic new tour, Burnt Out in Biscuit Land, to Peterborough’s Key Theatre. The evening will feature the acclaimed writer, artist and disability activist, Jess Thom.

The event is a mixture of conversation, performance, and film.

What can you expect?

In the words of Jess herself: “Biscuits! You can expect lots of Biscuits and some ridiculously catchy songs. Moments of rage, moments of joy and laughter and connection. Expect to be in a space that celebrates disability culture, difference and neurodiversity and sees that as a beautiful reality in our world.”

The evening also includes some local artists, commissioned by Jumped Up Theatre. Veteran Lavalamp DJ, Sean Clingan — supported by local music organisation — Beat This, will be playing pre-show in the bar area, Jenna Unwin will be sharing a work-in-progress ‘HERE:NOW’ — a combination of film and dance; inspired by the themes of Burnt Out In Biscuit Land.

Where does the idea of ‘Biscuit’ come from?

”Biscuit” is one of Jess’s regular verbal tics, as well as ‘hedgehog’ and ‘cats’, as seen in her starring role in the BAFTA-nominated Channel 4 programme, 'Biscuitland'. “We’re used to thinking about disability as a sad or tragic thing, but that’s not always the reality – there is so much joy, solidarity and friendship and that’s at the heart of this show for me.”

Disability is not something that we should shy away from.

So many people in the area — and around the world in general — are affected by, and live with, some form of disability. As mentioned before, it is time we highlighted this, and celebrated the solidarity that can come from this.

Right — what you've all been waiting for: accessibility

Jumped Up Theatre has been working with The Key Theatre to improve access to the event and venue — such as increased capacity for wheelchairs, BSL interpretation (Wed 14), captioning, audio-description, relaxed setting including a chill out space, social distancing, visual stories, and live streaming.
