Pressuring people to take a side is really not helping.
I don’t know about you, I hugely support International Women’s Day — despite it seeming as a society we realise women exist for that one day, then carry on.
It’s important that we take a step back and acknowledge that women do, in fact, need to look over their shoulder all the time, and take extra precautions, as a result of the threat that some men pose.
I’m not denying that, and I’m truly sorry that things aren’t already different.
However, I’ve seen so many posts on social media about how women should oppose men and framing it as 'girl power’. These posts seem to imply that all men are perves, rapists or sexist, or just hate women.
Now, if this was a Twitter 'debate’, I would be told that I’m feeling emasculated. It makes me feel horrible that, because of other people’s actions, all men get branded.
Yes, men aren’t the greatest towards women, and there is much work to be done, but furthering that divide and pressuring people to take a side is really not helping. I show the most compassion I can, and that feels completely undercut as soon as I enter that ‘arena’ simply because I am a man.
Anyway, I’m well aware of the potential hate I’ll get for saying this, but consider the compassion and thoughtfulness that has gone into wording this correctly, so as to not give the wrong impression.
